Prepping Your AC For Fall

The air is cooling as the summer season winds down.  The last thing on your mind is maintaining your air conditioning unit, especially after using it non-stop for the last couple of months with no problems.  However, prepping your AC for fall is still important.

Here are 3 easy steps to ensure your AC is prepped and ready for fall and later months:

  • Install a new unit now! Most units have a life span of 15 years (varies by usage, maintenance, and environmental factors).  If your unit is nearing its end, it’s best to install it during fall’s cooler months.  There may be installation delays during the summer due to everyone else making appointments with their contractors.  Doing this process also gives you valuable time to research your model.  There is no rush to install in the cooler months like in the summer months.
  • Give your unit a nice cleaning. Start by checking and changing your filters.  Checking the filter to make sure it is not clogged will keep your system operating at its max efficiency and keep your home free of airborne allergens and contaminants.  Also, wipe down the coils, casings, and frequently used controls.  Take the time while cleaning to also check if there are any obvious repairs that need to be made.  This is something many people forget to do (or would rather not do in the cold) during the winter months.
  • Schedule a maintenance check-up. Spending a small amount for a professional to check-out your ac can end up saving you money in the long run.  Technicians can detect potential problems before they become worse and more expensive.  Now is a good time to check on your heat pump as well.  Norris Air offers a USA Club Member Maintenance Plan.  This plan includes 2 tune-ups each year, a discount on all service repairs, priority on services, and many other benefits for a low price.

Although it may seem counter-intuitive to check your ac unit after using it, it will benefit the longevity and efficiency of your system while saving you from large expenses.
